Sustainable and green building are catch phrases heard often these days. What do they really mean to you and your home project? Green building is defined by Builder TV as "..the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings use resources - energy, water, and materials - through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal."
Timber framing is inherently a sustainable building method in that the end result, if properly maintained, can last for generations. By building a structure with a lifecycle of several generations, you are adhering to a sustainable building method. Choosing to incorporate local lumber into your timber frame means that fewer fossil fuels will be consumed in transporting your home materials. Consiously including green building products and energy efficient systems in your home further enhances the energy performance and life cycle of your home.
